International Day of the Girl

Picture
Thanks to all the girls, Leaders (and caregivers) for giving up an hour of the school holidays on Thursday 11 October to be part of the National initiative celebrating the International Day of the Girl.
Girls from all over the country were invited to gather and perform Girl Jam and Glenfield were joined by Victoria and her girls from Devonport District.  Thanks to Nathan and Noah who were happy to support us by waving our placards and dancing with their mum.  Thanks too to Chrissy for organising the meet and Gill for providing the music.

DISTRICT CAMP - July 2012

Otimai was home to the District for four days during the holidays as girls worked towards various badges and certificates. Skits were performed and damper made while focussing on Heritage...

Happy Birthday Ma'am

Picture

Glenfield Pippins celebrated Queen's Birthday with a High Tea fit for a Queen!
The girls made their own lamingtons then were seated in the Long Gallery for Tea.
Little fingers were crooked,  and glasses were raised in a Happy Birthday toast.

Mother's Day

Our 2nd Annual Mother's Day event was held in conjunction with one of our Girl Guide Awareness Month community activities to raise funds for Oxfam.  Twenty seven girls made a felt brooch and card for their Mum, Aunt, Grandma or Caregiver before tucking in to the pot luck desserts table.  The lucky recipient of the Chrysalis make up consult raffle was Leanne.

ANZAC DAY 2012

A beautiful day at the Glenfield War Memorial with a huge crowd and a good turnout from our girls and Leaders.  Well done to the girls who sold poppies and handed out the orders of service.  Thank you for sitting through the service while squinting into the sun - you made us proud.

St Patrick's Day BBQ & Fancy Dress

What a fun night of food, games and laughter we had, there were green leprechauns everywhere!  Thirty girls, 5 Leaders and 3 parents enjoyed the evening and we had some extremely well presented costumes in the parade.

Thinking Day - February 22nd

Picture
A day to remember our 'sisters' around the world and to celebrate the joint birthdays of our founder Lord Robert Baden-Powell and his wife Lady Olave (former World Chief Guide).
Fifty two girls from Glenfield, Sunnynook and Birkenhead districts gathered with their Leaders, parents and other well-wishers on Wednesday evening to commemorate the day with songs, thoughts and games.

Emails and postcards were received from our Guiding friends in Leicester and Cardiff, and the money raised has been forwarded to the World Thinking Day Fund.

Dargaville Bra Chain - World Record Beaten

Picture
2012 started really early (in the morning) for our Leaders Linda, Cheryl, Susan; Guide Emma and supporter Sue... they travelled to Dargaville to be part of the world record setting bra chain event.  Starting around 5am on Saturday 18th February, and in the fog, our little team strung together 10,001 bras during the course of the day to assist with the final total of near 170,000 bras - beating the record held by the Australians, and ending a two year campaign to raise awareness for Breast Cancer.  Thanks gals!

         2011 District Prizegiving

Picture

.
For those who attended the inaugural District Prizegiving, certificates and gifts were the order of the day.  Of course all girls achieve in GirlGuiding, that's part of our aim, however we also had girls, parents and Leaders alike who were nominated for their extra efforts and achievements as demonstrated throughout 2011.
Special certificates were presented to Mrs Isabel Burns as a thank you for attending District events each time she has visited from Scotland; to Mr David Franklin for his continued parent support in the role of assistant biscuit co-ordinator over the past three years; and to GirlGuiding Trefoil member Mrs Desma Howarth for her invaluable assistance in the kitchen and a keen supporter of our District events.  A large number of parents were thanked for their continued support; mention was made of the girl achievements already recognised within both Guiding. their schools or clubs; and Leaders were nominated by their peers for extracurricular achievements.  The evening was rounded off by the presenting of the District Co-ordinator's Overall Achiever Award to Kiara, followed by supper.

Glenfield Santa Parade

Picture
A fair representation of girls and leaders turned out to walk in the annual community Santa Parade. The weather was kind with a beautiful sunny morning and cooling breeze for the hour-long walk from High Road to McFetridge Park.  Brownies and Pippins from Hillcrest and their District Co-ordinator Jillian joined us as Hillcrest do not have a community parade of their own.  Brownies waved handmade flags, Guides carried the Guiding and New Zealand flags, Pippins carried Crystal their mascot doll, and all chanted their way along the route, ably led by Brownie Leader Amanda.  A number of our girls demonstrated their talents by also performing with their school and Church groups in Kapa Haka, Choir and Dance.  Well done girls, you looked very smart and got lots of public support.

JOTA/JOTI

Picture
Hundreds of Scouts & Guides descended upon Camp Maynard in Albany during the weekend of 15-16 October to take part in the annual Jamboree on the Airwaves and Internet.  Contact was made with local and overseas groups and there were plenty of fun activities to keep the kids busy for hours. Thank you to the Glenfield girls, families and Leaders who supported this event.

Regional International Day

Picture
Pippins, Brownies and Guides from across the North Shore region gathered at Taitamariki for a day of fun and activities.
Up first in the morning session, girls from Glenfield joined with girls from Birkenhead, Takapuna/Devonport and Whangaparaoa making such crafts as magnetic ribbon dragons, Japanese Kimono Dolls, hanging ocean-inspired dioramas and potting sunflower seeds.  The girls even got to try sushi.  Thank you Leaders for giving up another Saturday to make this event a success.

Film Stars! - Feb 2011

Picture
Filming has finished for the day, well our part has anyway...
Members of GirlGuidingNZ Glenfield and Birkenhead Districts, had the opportunity of being involved in the filming of an episode of “Bryan & Bobby”, a children’s television programme produced by Suzy Cato. Bryan & Bobby is a primary school age television series that focuses on matters that may affect our children during their young years. It certainly was fascinating to see the crew at work and to see just how long it takes to get a scene right! Our Guiding girls were “the innocent parties” as Bobby played his tricks, trying not to get caught out by Constable Bryan.

Camping @ Kaipara Kapers - Jan 11

Guides: Emma, Hannah & Maitreyi
New Zealand's first ever Zone camp, hosting more than 300 girls from Hauraki to Northland.  With activities such as Archery, Rock-climbing, Horse riding, Swimming, Kayaking, Crafts, Campfires and Community Service, the girls were able to fill in five days quite happily.  The sun shone and so did everybody involved.

Picture
Low-lying fog at 6am - not something many of the girls would have seen! The camp was eerily quiet at that time of the morning.
